Invisible Symbols in Life
Rope & Civilization
We inhabit a society replete with symbols, both visible and invisible. While some may elude recognition, they persist, as integral as ever. Symbols and objects often amalgamate to assume practical roles in our daily lives, their origins and meanings fading into obscurity over time.
Twisted and shaped by multiple fibers, rope stands as a foundational artifact of civilization, its roots extending back to Neanderthal sites approximately 50,000 years ago. In contemporary human society, rope serves a pivotal role. From facilitating the transport of goods for trade, to evolving into a garment that adorns our bodies, rope assumes diverse forms. Spiritually, it symbolizes connections between individuals in myriad cultures.
Rope connects us, thus the world is formed.
The Number Three, Triquetra, and Trinity
The number three holds profound significance across various cultures, embodying a sacred essence. As the smallest odd prime number and the sole prime preceding a square number, it holds a unique mathematical distinction. In the Christian context, three signifies the holy doctrine of the Trinity. In Daoism, it encapsulates three fundamental aspects: the universe (天), mother earth (地), and humanity (人), with the belief that three gave rise to all things.
The Triquetra, as a symbol representing the number three, carries multifaceted meanings and has traversed diverse cultures throughout history. Originating in the Iron Age and extensively employed in the 4th century BC, the Triquetra has symbolized the Triple Goddess, embodying the waxing, full, and waning Moon. Alternatively, it has represented the three primary elements shaping the world: earth, water, and fire. Over time, it underwent a transformative journey, assimilating into Christian symbolism and merging with the concept of the Trinity. In contemporary times, it continues to accrue meanings, always tethered to the fundamental idea of three.
As the inaugural installment of my design series, it encapsulates the essential significance of Ostara Jewellery. Serving as a beacon, this collection enlightens the manner in which we perceive and connect with the world through both visible and invisible symbols in life. In doing so, it assumes the role of a compass, guiding the creative endeavours in the Ostra Jewellery journey.
